Sources & Copyright
Kashmir Pages is a free library of Kashmir’s literature, history and heritage, and of spiritual writing from Kashmir and beyond. This page explains where our books and images come from, why we are able to share them, and what to do if you have a concern.
Books in the Library
We add a book to the Library only when we believe it is in the public domain, that is, no longer protected by copyright. In practice this means books published long ago whose authors, translators and illustrators died many decades ago. Most of the books in the Library were published before 1931, and their authors died well over sixty years ago, the term of copyright in India.
Most of our digital copies are scans made by university and public libraries, chiefly through the Internet Archive. Each book page names the library or collection the scan came from and links to the original, so you can always check the source. A few items, such as The Dhikr Book of Kashmir, were compiled by Kashmir Pages itself.
Public domain status can differ from country to country. If you plan to reuse a book outside India or the United States, please check the rules where you live.
Articles
Articles on Kashmir Pages are written by the Kashmir Pages team, drawing on the sources listed at the end of each article. The text of our articles is © Kashmir Pages. You are welcome to quote short passages with a credit and a link back to the article; for anything more, please contact us.
Images
Many of our images are historical photographs, paintings and engravings that are in the public domain. Others are used under free licences such as Creative Commons, which allow reuse on condition that the photographer is credited. Wherever this applies, the credit and licence are given in a short note at the end of the article.
For works by living artists, such as contemporary calligraphy, we describe the work and link to where it is published rather than reproducing it, unless the artist has given permission.
If you have a concern
We take care to share only what we are entitled to share, but mistakes can happen. If you hold the rights to anything on this site and believe it has been used without permission, please email info@kashmirpages.com with the page address and the details of your claim. We will review it promptly and, if we are in the wrong, remove or correct the material.
