Travels in Kashmir, Ladak, Iskardo, Vol. II by G. T. Vigne

The second volume of Godfrey Vigne's travels follows him beyond the valley of Kashmir, over the mountains to Ladakh and to Iskardo (Skardu) in Baltistan, with his observations on the people, routes, rulers and history of the high country in the late 1830s.

About this book
Vigne made several journeys from Kashmir into the mountains between 1835 and 1838, at a time when Ladakh and Baltistan were almost unknown to Europeans and the Dogra rulers of Jammu were extending their power over them.
This second volume completes his account. Like the first, it is illustrated with his own drawings, and it remains an important early source for the history and geography of Ladakh and Baltistan. Volume I, describing Kashmir itself, is also in the Library.
