About this book
Book VIII tells the story of the twelfth century, the age Kalhana himself lived through, with the immediacy of an eyewitness. It is longer than the first six books of the chronicle put together.
Stein's Memoir on the Ancient Geography of Kashmir, also in this volume, identifies the towns, temples, rivers and passes named by Kalhana on the ground, from Stein's own journeys through the valley, and is still a standard work. Volume I, with the introduction and Books I to VII, is also in the Library, and our reader's guide explains how to begin.
