Travels in Kashmir and the Panjab by Baron Charles Hügel

The Austrian naturalist Baron Charles von Hügel reached Kashmir in 1835 and went on to the court of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in Lahore. His account of the valley under Sikh rule, of its people and its government, is one of the most detailed of its time.

About this book
Hügel travelled as a scientist, collecting plants and specimens, but he was also a careful observer of people and politics. He describes the journey over the mountains, Srinagar and the lakes, the hardship of the peasantry, and the officials and travellers he met.
The English edition was translated with notes by Major T. B. Jervis, who added information on the geography of the region.
