Travels in Kashmir, Ladak, Iskardo, Vol. I by G. T. Vigne

Godfrey Vigne was one of the first Europeans to travel widely in Kashmir, Ladakh and Baltistan, between 1835 and 1838. This first volume of his account describes the valley under Sikh rule, its scenery, ruins and people, with his own drawings.

About this book
Vigne was a lawyer turned traveller and a gifted artist. He made several journeys into the valley and beyond it to Skardu, sketching and recording as he went, at a time when very few outsiders had been there.
His book is valuable for its descriptions of Srinagar, the old temples and Mughal gardens, and the condition of the people in the 1830s, and for the drawings, which are among the earliest European pictures of Kashmir. This volume is the first of two.
