Kashmir in Sunlight and Shade by C. E. Tyndale Biscoe

Cecil Tyndale Biscoe ran the Church Missionary Society school in Srinagar for more than fifty years. Here he describes the valley's beauty, the daily life, habits and humour of its people, and his long campaign to change Kashmiri schooling through sport, swimming and public service.

About this book
Tyndale Biscoe arrived in Srinagar in 1890 and turned a small mission school into one of the best-known schools in India, famous for rowing, swimming in the Dal Lake and its pupils' work in fires, floods and epidemics.
Written after thirty years in Kashmir, the book mixes affectionate and sometimes sharp observation of Kashmiri society with stories from the school. It is a vivid, very personal picture of Srinagar in the early twentieth century.
