The Valley of Kashmir by Walter R. Lawrence

Walter Lawrence spent six years settling the land revenue of Kashmir and came to know its villages better than any official before him. His book covers the valley's geography, climate, plants and animals, its history, its people and their trades, crafts and farming, and it is still the standard reference on nineteenth-century Kashmir.

About this book
Lawrence came to Kashmir in 1889 as Settlement Commissioner, with the task of surveying and assessing the land of the valley. The work took him into almost every village, and he listened closely to the cultivators whose lives he was recording.
The result is part gazetteer and part portrait. Chapters on the rivers, lakes, soils and seasons sit beside chapters on the Kashmiri language, religion, festivals, superstitions, food and dress, and on the hardships the peasantry had endured under successive rulers. More than a century later it remains the first book most historians of Kashmir reach for.
