About this book
This study appeared in instalments in The Indian Antiquary from November 1921. Koul opens with the place of women in Kashmir's history and then follows Lal Ded's life from her birth near Pandrenthan in the fourteenth century, through her unhappy marriage, to her life as a wandering ascetic revered by Hindus and Muslims alike.
The second part gathers her sayings, each given in Kashmiri with a translation. Read alongside Grierson and Barnett's Lalla-Vakyani, it gives a fuller picture of how her verses were known and understood a century ago.
