Selected Poems from the Divani Shamsi Tabriz (Rumi), translated by R. A. Nicholson

Rumi's lyric poems, written in the name of his spiritual companion Shams of Tabriz, are among the greatest love poetry in any language. This was Nicholson's first book: a selection of the odes in Persian with English translations, an introduction and notes.

About this book
After meeting the wandering dervish Shams-i Tabriz in 1244, Rumi poured out thousands of ecstatic poems, many of them signed with his friend's name rather than his own. Together they make up the Divan-i Shams.
Nicholson chose the poems that best show Rumi's mystical thought, gave the Persian text alongside a faithful translation, and explained the ideas behind them. The book helped introduce Rumi to English readers more than a century ago.
