About this book
Wakefield, a medical man, travelled through the valley and wrote this book as a companion for other visitors, mixing description with history and with what he learnt of the people's beliefs and way of life.
Like many Victorian travel books it reflects the attitudes of its time, but it records a great deal about Srinagar, its boats, bazaars and craftsmen, and the countryside a generation before the motor road arrived.
