Travels in the Himalayan Provinces of Hindustan and the Panjab, in Ladakh and Kashmir, Vol. I by William Moorcroft and George Trebeck

William Moorcroft, a veterinary surgeon to the East India Company, travelled from 1819 to 1825 through the Punjab, Ladakh and Kashmir on his way towards Bukhara. His journals, edited after his death by H. H. Wilson, are among the earliest detailed English accounts of Ladakh and the valley.

About this book
Moorcroft set out to find horses for the Company's cavalry and to open trade routes into Central Asia. He spent long periods in Ladakh and reached Kashmir in 1823, recording agriculture, trade, the shawl industry, government and daily life in close detail.
He and his companion George Trebeck died on the journey, and their papers were published years later. This is the first of the two volumes.
