Lalla-Vakyani, or The Wise Sayings of Lal Ded by Sir George Grierson and Lionel D. Barnett

Lal Ded, or Lalleshwari, the fourteenth-century mystic of Kashmir, is the first great poet of the Kashmiri language, and her sayings (vakhs) are still on the lips of Kashmiris today. This edition gives over a hundred of her verses in Kashmiri with an English translation, notes and a vocabulary.

About this book
Grierson, the great scholar of Indian languages, took down these verses from the recitation of a Kashmiri storyteller, Dharmadasa Darvesh, and worked on them with Pandit Mukunda Rama Shastri. Barnett, of the British Museum, helped prepare the text for publication.
Each verse is printed in Kashmiri with a translation and notes on its meaning and on the Shaiva philosophy behind it. The book was one of the first serious efforts to set down Lal Ded's sayings in writing, and it remains a key source for anyone studying her poetry.
