The Northern Barrier of India: A Popular Account of the Jummoo and Kashmir Territories by Frederic Drew

Frederic Drew, a geologist, spent ten years in the service of the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir, and for a time governed Ladakh. This shorter, popular version of his great survey describes the land, peoples, languages and history of the whole state, from Jammu to Gilgit and Ladakh.

About this book
Drew joined the Maharaja's service in 1862 to look for minerals and stayed until 1872, travelling through nearly every part of the state. In 1875 he published a large scholarly account, The Jummoo and Kashmir Territories, and two years later this more readable version for the general reader.
Its chapters on the different peoples of the state, the Dogras, Kashmiris, Ladakhis, Baltis and Dards, and on the mountains and rivers, are still widely cited.
