About this book

Knowles was a missionary of the Church Missionary Society in Srinagar who learnt Kashmiri well enough to compile a dictionary of its proverbs. He collected these stories from Kashmiri narrators, Hindu and Muslim, and translated them into English.

His footnotes explain the customs, sayings and beliefs the stories take for granted, which makes the book a record of everyday Kashmiri life and imagination as well as an anthology of tales.
