The 'Unveiling of the Veiled', written in Lahore in the eleventh century by the saint revered as Data Ganj Bakhsh, is the oldest treatise on Sufism in Persian. It explains the Sufi path, its doctrines and practices, and gives lives of the early saints. This is Nicholson's classic English translation.

About this book

Al-Hujwiri came from Ghazni and settled in Lahore, where his shrine, Data Darbar, is still one of the most visited in South Asia. He wrote the Kashf al-Mahjub in answer to a seeker's questions about the Sufi way.

The book sets out what Sufism is and is not, describes the teachings of the early masters and the main Sufi schools, and discusses repentance, poverty, love, contemplation, audition (sama) and other stations of the path. It shaped Sufism across the subcontinent, Kashmir included.
